January Meeting: Pollinators-The Key to our Future (Event cancelled due to covid/rescheduled 1/26 )

Plan to attend our first meeting of 2022 with Pollinators -The Key to our Future! presented by fellow Wild Ones members and Master Gardeners Alan Nass, Annette Weissbach and Claudia Shultz this Wednesday, January 12 at 6PM at the DePere Library 333 N Broadway, DePere. It should be a great way to warm up and get started thinking about the coming growing season. This is the first of two parts that will cover the significant role our landscape plans have on pollinators. The second session on February 9 will continue the conversation and showcase many of our local native plants complete with tips on how to include them in your gardens. Come to one or both sessions. As per Brown County guidelines, masks are recommended but not required.

RR Museum Garden Work Day

Work day at the Rail Road Museum Tuesday, June 7th from 3 pm to 5 pm. We will be removing unwanted plants and taking some time to brainstorm on possible additions to the garden. Please bring gloves and gardening tools. Hope to see you there. Some of the unwanted plants may fit your landscapes well. So a potential for some free plants.

Kevin Hendricksen our local invasive plant specialist and long-time Wild Ones member will take us on a walk along the trail to show us examples of Invasive species present. The tour will start at the corner of Dousman and Fisk. At the SGT Ben Edinger Memorial Trail.

We have brochures and extra copies of our pollinator garden plans to hand out. We originally thought we might have kits to sell but they were so popular they are sold out!

We have an exciting rescue opportunity in the next two weeks at the former home of member Bonnie Vastag. The dates and times are: Wednesday 9/28 and 10/5 from 4:30-6:30 PM and Saturday 10/1 and 10/8 from 9-11 AM. The new owners are kind enough to allow this rescue. Please respect the times listed and do not go to the property at any other time.
The plants available are from the prairie the Vastags seeded in 1996. The plants are suited to dry to medium soil/ tolerating part sun and part shade to all shade. Plant List: Forked White Aster, New England Aster, Sky Blue Aster, White Indigo, Bergamot, Cup Plant, Downy Sunflower, Golden Alexander, Northern Sea Oats, Sweet Grass, Pale Indian Plantain, Ox Eye Sunflower, Prairie Dock, Purple Coneflower, Sky Blue Aster, Stiff Goldenrod, Wild Quinine. There is Virginia Creeper among the plants - native but invasive. You may find Wild Raspberry and perhaps Poison Ivy.
Plant Rescues are a benefit of membership and therefore open to active members only. Membership materials will be available for anyone who wishes to join at the rescue. Dues must be made by check or cash that day. Plan for the weather and bring your own shovels and containers to transport the plants. Recycled plastic grocery bags work well as they help preserve moisture around the roots. For the best success plan to plant your plants that day or the next.
